Woman gets 30 years for toddler’s overdose death

A western Wisconsin woman has been sentenced to 30 year prison for giving a lethal overdose of a narcotic to a toddler.

Calling the crime “unimaginable,” Trempealeau County Judge John Damon on Thursday sent 24-year-old Amanda Butts, of Osseo, to prison for the death of 22-month-old Alexis Behlke.

Butts had been watching Alexis while her father was at work. The La Crosse Tribune reports Butts initially denied giving Alexis anything but children’s Tylenol after bringing her to the hospital in 2013. She later admitted giving Alexis an Oxycodone pill.

Butts pleaded guilty to first-degree reckless homicide and no contest to physical abuse of a child. Her attorney told the court she was severely depressed, under the influence of opiates and never should have been left in charge of children.
