Beaver Dam Family Center Ice Arena was selected as one of 10 semi-finalists in the “Light Like the Pros” competition.

The competition will award one community ice skating rink in an American Hockey League market an Ephesus LED sports lighting system valued at more than $50,000, according to a release.

The Beaver Dam Family Center Ice Arena represents the Milwaukee Admirals and hosts the Beaver Dam Hockey Association and Swan City Ice Skaters.

At the beginning of the 2017-2018 AHL season, rink owners, coaches and community members nominated rinks around North America and explained why they were deserving of a state-of-the-art LED system.

After a panel of judges narrowed down the submissions to 33 rinks, voters cast 40,000 online votes throughout January to narrow down the list to the 10 semi-finalists.

“It’s obvious from the strong support that these 10 rinks got during the initial voting stage that they are all valued members of their communities,” Christos Nikolis, executive vice president of marketing and business development for the AHL, said.

Typically, ice rinks use lights for more than 6,500 hours annually. With an LED switch, an ice rink would have a 70 percent reduction in energy use.

From Feb. 6 to March 2, people can vote at lightlikethepros.com. From there, four rinks will advance to the final round of voting.
