Wisconsin gun deer license sales are about on par with last year.

The state’s nine-day gun deer season opened Saturday. The state Department of Natural Resources released figures Tuesday that show as of midnight Sunday hunters had purchased 555,227 licenses that allow them to kill deer with a firearm across the state’s multiple deer seasons.

That’s down about 1.5% from 2018. Data from that year shows that as of midnight Sunday of opening weekend that year the DNR had sold 564,052 licenses.

Preliminary data shows the harvest was down dramatically over opening weekend this year, with hunters managing to kill only 90,286 deer. That’s down 27% from 123,090 deer killed over opening weekend 2018.
