Assembly Republicans have approved a bill that would force Wisconsin’s high school sports association to abide by the state’s open records law.

The bill’s author, Rep. John Nygren of Marinette, contends that making the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association more transparent could help avoid embarrassing episodes like the one the organization endured last month. Sports pundits and national commentators mocked the WIAA for asking school administrators to crack down on fan chants like “air ball” and “scoreboard.”

The Assembly approved the bill 61-34 early Wednesday morning. The bill goes next to the state Senate.
