WISC Editorial Agenda 2014 – One Madison/50 years of civil rights
Next week, and next Wednesday in particular, there are a couple of community events that are particularly relevant in light of our ongoing community conversation about racial disparities outlined in the Race to Equity report.
We’ll talk about the White Privilege Conference tomorrow, but today we want you to know about the day-long conference on the UW campus, “A Nation Still Under Construction: Observing the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.”
We appreciate the UW committing its resources, human and otherwise, to this part of our nation’s history that is, as the conference title points out, still unfolding today. The topics and expert panelists speak to the contemporary relevance of the discussion. At the same time we appreciate having 90-year-old Wisconsin civil rights pioneer Vel Phillips deliver the keynote. The first African-American woman to graduate from the UW Law School and serve as Wisconsin Secretary of State is a towering figure in Wisconsin history.
The seminar is next Wednesday at Union South. There is much to be done.
