Wis. coach cleared of punching high school athlete

A Wisconsin basketball coach will not be charged with battery after he was accused of punching a 17-year-old female athlete.

Indiana prosecutors will not file criminal charges against Fred Freeman, of Hartford, Wis., after witnesses told investigators the coach was breaking up a fight between two players.

Originally, police in the Indianapolis suburb of Fishers said a player and a witness told officers that Freeman verbally abused the girl after the team lost a game, then punched her in the face, threw her to the ground, got on top of her and put his hands around her throat.

The 47-year-old Freeman was arrested Monday night at a restaurant.

On Thursday, prosecutors said independent witnesses shared a different story and that Freeman was breaking up a fight.

Prosecutors said Freeman will not face charges unless something emerges to contradict those witnesses.
