Winter Olympics results: Short track speed skating men’s 1000m
John-Henry Krueger, a 22-year-old Pittsburgh native, won the men’s 500m, 1000m, 1500m and overall title at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials to qualify for his first Olympics.
Saturday, he made history receiving the first individual U.S. Olympic men’s short track medal since Apolo Ohno won a silver medal in the 2010 Games, and the first U.S. speed skating medal of any kind at the 2018 Games.
Krueger nearly skated to gold, finishing just over two-tenths of a second behind gold medal winner Samuel Girard of Canada. Girard won in a time of 1:24.650.
One of the pre-race favorites, Korean Yi-Rah Seo finished a distant third for the bronze, after being taken out in a crash along with his teammate Hyo-jun Lim, who finished fourth.
Krueger has been one of the top skaters for the U.S. since his teens, but he missed out on the Sochi Olympics after coming down with swine flu at the 2014 Olympic trials.
Earlier in PyeongChang he finished 19th in the 1500m.
