Winona State University student dies early Sunday morning
A Winona State University student died early Sunday morning after being struck by a train.
Derek Michael Bute, 25, fell on train tracks at Huff Street crossing in Winona. Police and Rescue units were dispatched after receiving a call at about 1:24 a.m.
Police found Bute when they arrived and transported him to Winona Health in an ambulance, where they pronounced him dead.
Bute started studying at WSU in 2012 and was majoring in exercise science.
Family and friends of Bute are holding a vigil in remembrance at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The incident is still under investigation.
