William “Bill” Smith, age 82 of Mauston, Wisconsin passed away peacefully Monday, May 8, 2017 at Our House Assisted Living in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 12:00 noon at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Mauston with Father Antony Arokiyam celebrating. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Burton Koppang American Legion Post 81 of Mauston. Visitation will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at noon.
Bill was born April 14, 1935 in Mauston the son of William and Lucille (Hoilien) Smith and attended schools in Mauston. He enlisted into the U.S. Army, was a member of the 11th Airborne and was honorably discharged. With his first wife they moved to Oregon and shortly after they divorced. In May of 1967, Bill met and married Ann Berger in Oregon and moved back to the Mauston area. He started working as a locksmith, then worked at Smith True Value hardware store with his parents.
Bill was also a talented woodworker and carpenter making furniture items and picture frames for many people and donating his time, talent and crafts to the church. He was active in the community and church for the past 50 years and always had a generous and “spur of the moment” attitude for helping others.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Ann; sons, Bill, Tracy, Doug and Eddie; daughter, June; sister, Joy (Don) Hurry; niece, Diane (Reid) Brueser; nephew, Brian (Dina) Hurry; daughter in law, Tracy; and a granddaughter, Kim. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Scott and Ann’s son, Michael.
