William O. Starry
William O. Starry, age 93, of Portland, OR and formerly of Janesville, peacefully passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, May 23, 2012.
He was born in Horicon, WI on March 7, 1919, the son of Sylvester C. and Esther (Moldenhauer) Starry. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific Theater for 3 years during WWII. Bill married Mildred F. Schmutzler in First Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam on Jan. 26, 1946, and she preceded him in death on May 16, 2002. He was a long-time resident of Beaver Dam before moving to Janesville in 1988, then finally to Portland, OR in 2011. He had worked for the Kirsh Foundry in Beaver Dam for over 30 years, retiring in 1982.
Bill loved sports and was a talented athlete, having played semi-pro baseball and basketball in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. He co-founded the Little League Baseball program in Beaver Dam. He enjoyed golfing and fishing with friends, dancing with Millie, and cheering on his favorite teams – the Packers, the Badgers, the Brewers, and the Cornell Rams. Bill will be remembered as a true friend; a loving husband, father and grandfather whose quick sense of humor and fun were with him until the end.
He is survived by his son, John (Joanne) Starry of Wittenberg, WI; daughter, Jean (Jay) Heindel of Portland, OR; 5 grandchildren: Jeff (Mary) Starry of Beaver Dam, Teri Starry of Milwaukee, Tim Starry of Tucson, AZ, Zack Heindel of Santa Monica, CA; and Matt (Maegan) Heindel of Madison; and 5 great grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Millie; and 2 sisters, Dorothy Starry and an infant sister.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at Milwaukee Grill, 2601 Morse St. in Janesville on June 8th from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. Inurnment will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park Mausoleum.
