William H. Smith

JANESVILLE—William H. Smith, of Janesville, passed away on Friday, September 14th at University Hospital in Madison. He was born on April 3rd, 1923 to Marshall and Martha (Niedergang) Smith in Princeton, Illinois. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1941, and attended Northern Illinois State Teacher’s College (NISTC) in the Fall of ’41. In November of 1942, he and other members of the NISTC football team enlisted in the US Army Air Force. He served as a Celestial Navigation Trainer in the 4th Army Air Force until 1946. He returned to NISTC and graduated in 1947. He taught and coached at Buda High School in Buda, IL from 1947-1948. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1949 with a Master’s Degree in Physical Education. He was employed in the sales department of Central Soya, Inc. from 1949-1957. Bill married V. Kathryn Foster in St. Louis, Missouri on August 9th, 1952. In 1957 he and Kate moved to Janesville where he incorporated Smith’s Feed Service, which he owned and operated until 1984. He was one of the founding organizers of Boys Baseball of Janesville (now Janesville Youth Baseball), and helped coach the 1962 state championship little league team. He managed and coached the Rock County Bank Cardinals until 1975. An active member Janesville Noon Rotary from 1964, he was involved in many committees, was a member of the bowling team and was elected a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of the Janesville Elks Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, golf and his cardiac rehab class. He was an avid fan of high school sports, Badger football and the Chicago Bears.

He is survived by wife, Kathryn of Janesville; and two sons: Charles (fiancé Laurie Olin) Smith of Janesville, James (Jeanne Sabbert) Smith of St. Louis; four grandchildren: Zachary Smith, Alexandra Smith, Lydia Smith and Hayley Smith; and Barbara Smith of Milton.

Visitation will be at SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY, Janesville, on Tuesday, September 18th, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be at the FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday, September 19th at 12:00 noon. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Princeton, Illinois on Wednesday, September 19th at 3:00 p.m. Special thanks to Golden Living in Fort Atkinson, and UW Hospital and Clinics in Madison for their care.
