William G. “Barney” Barnhart

MADISON-William G. “Barney” Barnhart, age 94, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Capital Lakes Nursing Home.

He was born on Sept. 30, 1919, in Ottawa, Ill., the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Houser) Barnhart. Barney married Katherine Luedeman on Aug. 2, 1940, at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Madison. He graduated from high school in Illinois and continued his education at Greeley State College. Barney returned to Madison in 1938 where he met the love of his life. He started working at Oscar Mayer in 1942 and enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1944 for two years. Barney then returned to Madison and later retired from Oscar Mayer after 42 years of service. Barney and Katherine retired to Hot Springs Village, Ark., in 1982, and after 18 years, they returned to Madison in 2001. His passions were golfing, bowling, and his family. Barney was well known for his volunteer services through Kiwanis, and received many awards.

Barney is survived by his daughters, Linda (Roger) Stack of Waukesha and Patricia (Lee) O’Kroley of Madison; grandchildren, Andrew (Heather) Stack of Hartford, Alison (Steve) Campbell of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Gregg (Crystal) O’Kroley of De Forest, Eric O’Kroley of Madison, and Chad (Amy) O’Kroley of Sun Prairie; and great-grandchildren, Navada, Liza and Greta Campbell, and Colton and Kenzie O’Kroley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine in 2003; granddaughter, Kimberly O’Kroley in 1983; parents; two brothers; and one sister.

Funeral Services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2014, with Eldonna Hazen officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.
