William “Bill” Mattern
DEFOREST/DES MOINES, Iowa-William “Bill” Mattern, age 95, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Agrace HospiceCare.
The fifth of six children, he was born on May 26, 1919, in Sheboygan, to Fred and Sophie (Weiss) Mattern. In 1941, he married his high school sweetheart, Eloise, who remained his partner in life-and tennis-for 69 years until her death in 2010.
Bill retired from a long career with Equifax Credit Bureau. He loved his family, his home, his job, tennis, books, trees and chocolate. A man of intelligence and substance, he met life with equanimity and above all, a wicked sense of humor.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Kathy; sister, Ruth Dusold; brother-in-law, Robert Lindow; and many loving nieces and nephews who will remember the fun and loving spirit that was “Uncle Billy.” He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his brothers, Daniel and Arthur; and sisters, Minnie and Elsie.
A private celebration of Bill and Eloise’s lives will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare or Arbor Day Foundation.
Special thanks for their care and concern to Dr. Amy Daley, Dr. Roy Ozanne, David Wilson, PAC, Bernie and Bob Hartwig, Sue and Chris Ellibee, Peggy Person, Karen Schacht, his friends at Parkside Assisted Living, the inpatient and facilities staff and volunteers at Agrace, and the biker chicks.
