Will Quintez Cephus testify? Decision to be announced Friday

Former UW football player Quintez Cephus’ attorneys said a decision will be made Friday on whether or not Cephus will testify in court.

Cephus is being accused by two women who say he sexually assaulted them last year.

UW football player Danny Davis testified Thursday in the trial of his former teammate, admitting that he took photos of two women who say Cephus sexually assaulted them.

Cephus has been on trial in Dane County this week, with both women testifying that they were intoxicated and did not consent to having sex with Cephus in April 2018.

A criminal complaint alleged that Davis had taken pictures of the two women in bed, with one of them saying they woke up and saw the photos being taken.

In court Thursday, Davis called the actions “a big mistake.”

“As soon as I took it, I regretted it,” Davis said on the stand. “I knew it was wrong. It was a mistake. She heard the flash because the flash went off and she got upset and as soon as she came out of the room and confronted me about it, I deleted it.”

Davis also testified that he didn’t think the women were that intoxicated, or that Cephus had raped the women.

“They weren’t stumbling, they were walking normal on their own,” Davis said.

He said one of the victims told him that she was mad at herself for hooking up with Cephus.

and that he never heard the victim say that Cephus “raped her”.

Davis, a wide reciever, was suspended from the Badger football team for two games for his involvement in the incident. The district attorney declined to charge Davis for his actions. Davis remains on the team.

When Davis was asked about his friendship with Cephus, he said he considers him a friend, but said they were much closer when they were in school together. After Cephus was expelled, Davis said they didn’t keep in touch as much. We had a quick break when Cephus began crying.

In court Wednesday, one of Cephus’ accusers said she doesn’t remember meeting Cephus at a Madison bar, or details of the alleged assault.

Tuesday, another woman described waking up and being confused as to why she was naked or how they got in Cephus’ apartment.

The prosecution is trying to prove the women were too drunk to consent, while the defense says the women knew what they were doing and had a consensual threesome with Cephus.

Court resumes at 8 a.m. Friday. Several more defense witnesses are expected to testify before final arguments are made. The prosecution may call rebuttal witnesses but have finished their case in chief.
