Wilfred P. Hartung, 86, of Platteville died on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center, Platteville.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 27, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville. Rev. Faustino Ruiz will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville. Friends may call from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, where there will be a prayer service at 8:30 p.m., friends may also call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Thursday. Wilfred was born on February 19, 1926 in Dickeyville, Wisconsin, the son of George and Teresa (Averkamp) Hartung. He was united in marriage to Patricia Rouse on July 12, 1986 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville. Wilfred attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Sinsinawa, Wisconsin, and St. Mary’s School, Platteville. Wilfred farmed on the family farm on Southwest Road, rural Platteville, for many years. Wilfred’s father died when he was a young man, whom Wilfred stepped up to work and farm the family farm. Wilfred was known in Grant County to have some of the best pigs and steers in the county. He was a top notch sportsman bagging 52 turkeys’ several of which Brian Olson did taxidermy on for him. He and Patricia enjoyed many Tri-State bus tours throughout the United States. He collected John Deere tractors and lawn mowers.
Wilfred is survived by his wife, Patricia of Platteville; two brothers, Robert (Rita) Hartung of Nathrop, CO; Eugene (Florence) Hartung of Cody, WY. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Linus and Cletus Hartung, sisters, Florence Meyer, Rosemary Reisen, and Lorraine VanSant, sister-in-law, Alice Hartung, brother-in-law, Mark Meyer.
