Whitewater defeats Linfield 20-14
Defense forces turnover on Linfield's final drive
WHITEWATER, Wis. — Saturday at Perkins Stadium, Whitewater football survived a second half Linfield rally to win 20-14 and advance to the NCAA Division Three National Championship for the ninth time in 10 years.
Whitewater got the scoring started in the first quarter when quarterback Matt Behrendt connected with receiver Jake Kumerow for an eight-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0.
In the second quarter, Behrendt threw a screen pass to running back Dennis Moore. Moore did the rest, scoring from 46 yards out to make it 14-0 heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, Linfield responded. Wildcats quarterback Sam Riddle hooked up with Levi Altringer for a 14 yard score and cut the Warhawks lead to 14-7.
Later in the third, Riddle scored on a quarterback keeper and tied the game at 14-14.
In the fourth quarter, the Warhawks took control. Moore ran in a touchdown from 33 yards out. The point after attempt was no good, so the Warhawks took a 20-14 lead.
Linefield drove into Whitewater territory and with two-minutes left before John Flood sacked Riddle, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Mykaell Bratchett, sealing the win for the Warhawks.
Whitewater will play Mount Union in the Stagg Bowl Friday at 6 p.m. in Salem, Va.
