Whistleblower asks Obama to appoint VA watchdog

Tomah VA Medical Center under new leadership

Wisconsin whistleblower Ryan Honl has asked President Barack Obama to go outside the Department of Veterans Affairs to appoint a chief watchdog for the agency.

Honl met Obama Thursday at the airport ahead of Obama’s speech at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Honl brought attention to overprescribing practices and retaliatory behavior at a VA medical center in Tomah. The hospital is at the center of multiple investigations after reports concluded patients there were given high doses of narcotics.

Acting Inspector General Richard J. Griffin announced this week he will retire.
