MADISON-Welcome Fawcett, age 74, of Madison, passed away on Monday, Oct. 15, 2012. She was born on Oct. 24, 1937, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Charles and Welcome (Carlton) Skannal. She married James Thomas Fawcett in January 1964, in Nevada. Welcome earned her B.A. from Barnard College in 1959, her M.A. from Columbia University in 1960, and her J.D. from University of California, Berkeley in 1964. Welcome worked as an attorney for much of her life. She was also a tutor at the Wisconsin Literacy Network, and worked at Canal Alliance in San Rafael, California, where she developed a program to assist immigrants to become U.S. Citizens. She also served on the Honolulu City Council from 1983 until 1987, including chairing the social services committee. She enjoyed classical and jazz music, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Welcome is survived by her husband of 48 years, James; son, David (Darcy Haber) Fawcett; grandchildren, Ariel and Benjamin Haber-Fawcett; sisters, Lesley (Erik) Svenson and Lynn (Max) Kruse; and nephews, Chris and Tim Menefee. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A Celebration of Welcome’s Life will be held at 1111 Rutledge St. Madison, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Welcome Fawcett Immigration Fund, C/O Canal Alliance, 91 Larkspur St., San Rafael, CA. 94901.
