MADISON, Wis. - A strong cold front is moving through the area, causing a rapid drop in temperatures.
Rain is quickly changing to freezing rain and sleet, and then to snow. Only minor accumulations are expected, but roads will be slippery this afternoon and evening. Temperatures will fall into the 20s this evening.
A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. for Juneau, Adams, Vernon, Crawford, Richland and Grant counties and until 8 p.m. for Marquette, Green Lake, Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Green, Iowa, Jefferson, Lafayette, Rock, Sauk and Walworth counties.
Any light snow showers and flurries will come to an end this evening as the system exits to the east.
Any snow accumulations will be less than an inch. Some clearing may develop late at night. Temperatures will fall to near 10 degrees by early Friday morning.
Friday will be partly sunny, breezy and colder. High temperatures will only be near 20 degrees. Friday night will become mostly clear and very cold with lows near zero.
The city of Madison Streets Division said it will dispatch 33 crews to maintain the salt routes and sand first areas Thursday. Crews will maintain their routes through the after-work rush hour and into the evening. A fresh deployment of personnel will be dispatched at midnight if conditions require it to maintain the routes ahead of the Friday morning commute.
Streets Division staff said that at the start of the snow for rush hour Thursday, temperatures are expected to be warm enough to allow for salt to be used as needed on the salt routes. The salt routes are the main thoroughfares, Madison Metro routes, and roads around schools and hospitals.
