We need action against sexual assault, not just awareness
Really, our goal of calling sexual assault what it is necessarily begins with education and yes, awareness.
Well, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and we will jump at the chance to hop on the awareness bandwagon.
And, as our agenda item provocatively suggests, we will start by saying unwanted sexual acts forced on a woman by a man is sexual assault. You don’t have to wonder or second guess or defer: It is…sexual assault.
And sexual assault is a serious and widespread public health issue, and 1 in 5 women in the United States have experienced sexual assault — rape — in their lives.
Maybe calling it what is will help, because frankly awareness doesn’t cut it for us anymore. What we need is action. Sexual assault needs to stop and men need to act to stop it.
