Waunakee volunteers help hungry in Haiti
WAUNAKEE, Wis. — More than a 1,000 Waunakee residents spent their Sunday helping people that most of them will never meet.
Volunteers put together 300,000 meals on behalf of the Waunakee Food for Kidz Program.
The majority of those meals will go to the Feed My Lambs orphanage in Haiti. Phillip Rego is the head of that orphanage. He was in Waunakee overseeing the project. He said the people back home in Haiti are well aware of what the folks in Wisconsin are doing.
“They’ve seen the food. They’ve seen the quality of the food. They’re just overwhelmed,” he said. “They’re actually speechless.”
The rest will stay right here in Dane County.
“Some of the meals will stay locally,” volunteer Joni Juergens said. “About 50,000 will go to Dane County Community Action Coalition for local food pantries.”
Waunakee Food for Kidz has helped feed the hungry for 12 years now. This is the first year they’ve sent food to Haiti.
