Waunakee volunteer group dishes out one-millionth meal

One million meals seems like a tall order, but more than 700 volunteers worked Sunday afternoon to get there.

Tables covered the gym floor at the Waunakee Village Center, where there stood an assembly line of volunteers pouring, weighing, and packing meals. Music blared over the speakers as volunteers packed the seats, all working hard to make as many bags as possible.

One of the younger volunteers was 6-year-old Lexi Fuhremann, Sporting a hair net, she made sure there was just enough food in each bag.

“It’s kind of like a dinner food for some people who don’t have the good of food and stuff,” Lexi explained.

Lexi’s mom, Kristen Fuhremann, brought her son and daughter to the Food for Kidz event. Her family has never packed up plastic bags with rice, soy, protein powder, and dried vegetables, but the kids wanted to stick around for a second shift because they were having such a good time.

“This is an opportunity to get the kids an experience to give back,” Fuhremann noted.

Feed The Need is a regional effort that provides food to the hungry, both locally and internationally. Staff member Eric Jurgins says of the 180,000 or so meals they expected to put together this weekend, about 70,000 would go to the Dane County Community Action Coalition to distribute to area food pantries. The rest will be shipped overseas, this time to Indonesia and Afghanistan.

“Just a little bit of help from you can contribute a lot,” Jurgins said. “I think it goes a long way for the people that receive the meals.”

The group met a massive meal milestone with the help of Sunday’s volunteers. Since Food for Kidz started back in 2006, the group has served one million meals.

Jurgins mentioned, “Really quite an accomplishment for the organization and the group.”

Each small plastic bag provides about six meals each. According to the organization’s statistics, every $25 donation pays for 166 meals. Jurgins said with no paid staff, any contributions go straight to making and sending the meals.
