WATCH: Rockton officials provide update after second day of fighting chemical fire

ROCKTON, Ill. — Local officials are giving an update after a second full day of fighting a chemical fire at the Chemtool plant in Rockton, just south of Beloit and the Wisconsin border.

Earlier today, Rockton Fire Chief Kirk Wilson said a private industrial firefighting team from Louisiana arrived at the scene to help put out the remaining fire. Those crews dug special trenches around the plant and put absorbant booms in the Rock River to prevent potentially toxic runoff and specialized foam from getting into the water.

As of Tuesday afternoon, people living within one mile of the plant were still being kept out of their homes.

Fire officials asked for patience as they tried to put out the fire, which started around 7 a.m. Monday.
