Walker group denies talk of lawsuit settlement

The group Friends of Scott Walker says because Gov. Walker isn’t a party to a federal lawsuit, there is no legal standing for Walker or his campaign committee to reach a settlement.

Earlier this week, a person close to the investigation told the Associated Press Walker’s attorney is discussing a possible settlement with the lead investigator that would end the probe.

The statement from Friends of Scott Walker was released Thursday.

The person who spoke Wednesday to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity said he could not do so publicly because of a secrecy order covering the investigation.

The person said he had spoken with several people with direct knowledge of the discussions between prosecutors and Walker’s attorney.

The secret investigation, known as a John Doe, focuses on alleged illegal coordination between conservative groups, Walker’s campaign and others during recall elections in 2011 and 2012.

The Wall Street Journal in an editorial on Wednesday first reported on the possible settlement.
