Virginia Kay Wyss

Virginia Kay Wyss, 71, of Janesville, died peacefully on Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, in Milwaukee at the home of her daughter, Carolyn, from pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her loving sister, daughter, and son-in-law. She was born in Janesville on Dec. 7, 1940, the daughter of Harold and Dorothy (Caldow) Brown. She graduated Janesville High School in 1959 and the Michael Reese School of Nursing in Chicago in 1962. She married Robert Henry Wyss on Oct. 13, 1962, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Robert died on Feb. 4, 1986. Their son, Ronald Allen Wyss, died in Janesville on Oct. 16, 2004. Virginia began her nursing career working with Sister Michael Berry at Mercy Hospital in Janesville. She later joined Dean Riverview Clinic to manage healthcare quality control and physician recruitment. Virginia and her family were members of the Rock Aqua Jays Waterski Team since the 1950’s. She happily volunteered in the kitchen and made beautiful costumes for many years when her children skied in the shows. She served on the Janesville School District Board of Supervisors from 1995 through 2005, and was elected as board president in 1999, 2000, and 2001. Virginia was an incredible ambassador for Agrace HospiceCare. She served on its Foundation Board of Directors from 2006 through 2012, and on its Rock County Capital Campaign for the past two years. Virginia enjoyed serving on the Janesville Country Club Board of Directors and St. Mary’s Catholic Church Finance Committee. She used her experience to set up the Blood Pressure Clinic at St. Mary’s and volunteered in the church’s homeless shelter.

She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (Jay) Peters of Milwaukee; 4 grandchildren: Bobby and Brianna Wyss of Janesville, Grace and Marianna Peters of Milwaukee; 2 brothers, David (Kathie) Brown and Richard (Nancy) Brown; sister, Rhea (Michael) Bischoff; brother-in-law, Roger Sterk. Virginia loved her nephews and nieces like her children: Mike (Denise) Brown, Jim Brown, Ceci (Jeff) Ketner, Jennifer Brown, Dan (Laura) Brown, Jeff (Naddya) Bischoff, Christine (Andrew) Fleming, Dan (Trisha) Sterk, Doug Sterk and Lynann Sterk. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Dorothy Brown; husband, Robert Wyss; and son, Ronald Wyss.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at ST. MARY’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, Janesville with Rev. Stephen J. Umhoefer, Rev. Robert Hughes and Rev. Michael Bertram officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY. Memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare, Inc. or St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Janesville.
