Village awaits sale of Wausau paper mill site

Leaders in Brokaw are trying to develop a plan for village’s future, after the Wausau Paper mill closed after 112 years of operation.

The Wausau Daily Herald reported that Wausau Paper was the village’s biggest water customer, paying $10,000 a month. Now, taxpayers might have to absorb that cost.

Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Director David Eckmann is working with the village to develop a long-term plan.

Wausau Paper owns more than 100 acres in the village, including properties the company bought from home owners years ago for a possible mill expansion.

Brokaw Village President Jeff Weisenberger said he’d like to see the mill sell those properties back for residential use. He’d also like to see a manufacturing business or multiple businesses on the current mill site.
