Vet teams up with local restaurant for annual Help a Vet Fundraiser

A Waunakee veteran is teaming up with a local restaurant for a Veterans Day fundraiser, ensuring Dane County vets are taken care of even after the holiday has passed.

Roadside Grill in Windsor was busy on Saturday as people packed in there to honor veterans during the third annual “Help a Vet Fundraiser.”

Chad Adler founded and organized the event. A vet himself, he wanted to help out his fellow veterans heading into the holidays.

“I wanted to give back, so what started out as me wanting to raise $500 over the lunch hour to feed homeless veterans for Thanksgiving turned into something miraculous,” Adler said.

That first year, with just two days of planning, Adler and Roadside Grill owner Pete collected over $3,000.

“I remember that night, me and Pete sitting out back in the restaurant looking at each other like did that really just happen? It was pretty phenomenal,” Adler said.

The fundraiser has grown since then. This year they’re hosting a raffle and selling t-shirts. Roadside Grill is donating all of its proceeds from the day as well. The money will be given to VFW Post 7591, who will distribute it to local organizations that work with vets.

“We’re here because of them. Freedom, we didn’t get it. We didn’t buy it. They worked for it for us,” Tim Foulker, who bought a t-shirt, said.

Adler said he received help when he needed it and now wants to make sure other vets get the same support.

“If I can get them a warm meal for Thanksgiving or a jacket to get through our Wisconsin winters or whatever they need, to get through the winter and then some, it’s my way of giving back,” he said.

Adler hopes to raise between $12,000-15,000.
