MINNEAPOLIS — Former Verona Area High School baseball standout Ben Rortvedt realized a dream on Friday night.

The catcher in the Minnesota Twins organization made his first major league start in his first major league game.

Rortvedt went 1-for-3 with a walk and had an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th inning, helping his team to a 9-1 victory over division rivals and AL Central leaders Kansas City.

After the game, Rortvedt was grateful, posting on Instagram: “I am truly overwhelmed by all the support I’ve received in the past 24 hours. Thank you to everyone who has ever supported and played a role in my career. I could never have done this alone! 4/30/2021.”

While Rortvedt was making the most of his MLB start, his former high school cheered him on as the first VAHS Wildcat to make it to the big leagues.

The 23-year-old was picked by the Twins in the second round of the 2016 draft.  The Twins will finish a three game series against the Royals this weekend.
