Verona hockey moves into state semifinals
Wildcats have a rematch with the Tritons
MADISON, Wis. — The Verona boys hockey team beat Superior 3-0 Thursday afternoon in the WIAA state boys hockey quarterfinal at the Alliant Energy center.
The Wildcats started the scoring mid-way through the first on the power play. Phil Fromberger scored give Verona the early 1-0 lead.
Verona’s Charlie Parker scored 53 seconds into the second period and then Brogan Baker added another second-period goal.
“This group they defiantly come together as a family one of our best lines tonight was our third line which in previous games have not got a whole lot of ice time,” said Joel Marshall, Verona head coach.
“After the first goal we all got the good confidence and stuff and that quick goal in the second was huge and everyone is getting up. We knew it would be a tough team and we didn’t know the outcome and we worked hard and we buried our chances,” said Phil Fromberger, Verona senior.
“The team played outstanding. It was a great group effort by every player every line and everyone contributed and we were able to get the win so it’s great,” said Charlie Parker, Verona senior.
Verona will now face Green Bay Notre Dame Friday night in the state semifinals at 6p.m. The Wildcats knocked off the Tritons in the semifinals last year. Green Bay is ranked No. 1 in the state, while the Wildcats are ranked No 2.
The Tritons knocked off defending champion Eau Claire Memorial 7-0.
This is Verona’s third straight trip to state and sixth overall.
