Verona High School Tries To Win State Hockey Title

If a team’s record is 25-1-1, they’ve had a pretty good year. But the Verona High School boys’ hockey team wants more than just a good record. They want a state championship.

On Wednesday, the Wildcats went to the Alliant Energy Center to practice for the state tournament. Verona is ranked No. 3 in the state and has what teams need to have a chance at winning state: Depth. They’ve got a lot of guys who can do a lot of things on the ice.

“We’re definitely excited, guys are excited,” said Verona head coach Joel Marshall. “The depth is definitely an asset we have this year with the experience of 11 seniors but also some of our freshmen, sophomores that are adding on the point side of things, with their offense. Everybody’s confident no matter who’s on the ice, so we’ll see how the week goes.”

“Our team’s pretty confident right now,” said senior captain Eddie Matsushima. “I mean, we’re just buzzing. Half of it is adrenaline, half of it is i think we’re ready but it’s- we’re pretty confident right now.”

Verona will play in the nighttime session at 6 p.m.Thursday, with No.1-ranked Green Bay Notre Dame against No. 2-ranked Superior playing first. Verona then plays Sparta Co-op at about 8:15 p.m.
