Verona Boys’ Hockey Advances To WIAA Seminfinals
The Verona High School Wildcats boy’s hockey team hopes their fourth trip to the state hockey championships will bring them their first state title.
They took a first step in that direction by beating the Sparta Co-op team 8-0 in the last quarterfinal game Thursday at the Alliant Energy Center.
The Wildcats put on a show, and were in control from the beginning. In the first period, Zach Jones scores on the power play on the assist from Eddie Matsushima.
Matsushima also fed Michael Stevens for a goal at the end of the period to make it 2-0 Wildcats.
In the second, Matsushima gets an unassisted goal of his own, and the rout was on. Verona is now 26-1-1 this year and moves on to the state semifinals.
Verona will face the number one ranked team in the state Friday. Green Bay Notre Dame beat second ranked Superior 5-1 Thursday behind two goals from Tony Stillwell and two assists from Tim Davison.
In the other two afternoon quarterfinals, Brookfield beat Eau Claire Memorial in overtime, and defending champ Wausau West beat Marquette. Brookfield and Wausau West will meet in the first semifinal Friday at 6 p.m. Verona and Green Bay play in the second semifinal around 8:30 p.m.
