Vern attended schools in the Kaneland School District, graduating from Kaneland High School in 1972. He played baseball and football, and there began his love of sports. He was a diehard Chicago White Sox and Bears fan, but also enjoyed watching any team he could find on TV. You would always see Vern wearing some type of sports shirt and/or cap. On Vern’s 21st birthday (1974) he was united in marriage to Ellen Hauser and they made their home in Elburn, IL. In 1990 they moved their family to DeForest, WI.

Vern was a volunteer fireman with the Elburn & Countryside Fire Department and part-time patrolman for the Elburn Police Department, Elburn, IL in the early 70’s. He also acquired his EMT certificate. Vern worked at the Holmstad, Batavia, IL as a groundskeeper, and began his own lawn care business where he could work outside and enjoy the weather. In 1990 he brought his business to DeForest. He also worked at Woodman’s, Prefinished Millwork, Bruce Company and his last position was with Nord Gear where he made many friends. Vern inherited his “gift of gab” from his father, Vernon Sr. Talking with everyone he came in contact with.
