Vanko plays through pain with Capitols
Oregon native deals with loss of father
MADISON — Madison Capitols defenseman Alec Vanko has had a great hockey career.
He starred at Oregon High School and will play at Minnesota State-Mankato next fall after his time with the Capitols.
Vanko credits his dad, Bob with keeping him focused on hockey. “He was always by my side throughout it, ” Alec said. “I think that was always our relationship, hanging out at the rink and stuff like that.”
But last November, Vanko’s life changed dramatically when Bob passed away.
Alec Vanko has continued his hockey career with strong memories of his father.
“Getting back to hockey was all he would have wanted me to do,” said Vanko.
“Before every game I leave one extra ticket. One for my Dad, just so he always knows he can have that spot, but I know he’s watching from up above.”
