Vacationers evacuated in Lake Delton hotel fire

The dry weather likely played a role in a fire up in the Wisconsin Dells, according to Lake Delton firefighters.

Multiple fire agencies were on the scene of a fire at the Carousel Inn and Suites in Lake Delton, which started just before 2 a.m. Friday.

“This is clearly a contributing factor, the dry weather,” said Lake Delton Fire Chief Darren Jorgenson. “The landscaping, the bushes were very tinder-dry and then able to be ignited quite easily.”

The Sauk County Sheriff’s office said flames and smoke were showing from the hotel on Wisconsin Dells parkway, two miles from I 90-94.

Everyone was evacuated from the building, and there are no reports of injuries. A visitor to the inn says a fire alarm cued him into what was happening.

“I didn’t realize it was an actual fire alarm, or the real deal,” said Craig Bohn. “I stepped out of the building and saw some flames at the far end of the building, on the upper level. One of the rooms was already engulfed in flames.”

Bohn said he and his family are scheduled to stay at the inn through Sunday. Now they will have to find another place to stay.
