UW to hold commencement at Camp Randall

University of Wisconsin-Madison seniors who want to walk in their graduation this May will see big changes in the time and place of the ceremony.

We all know Camp Randall Stadium is packed for Badger Saturdays in the fall and this spring on May 17 another huge crowd will be at Camp Randall.

The university announced Wednesday that the class of 2014 graduation ceremony will be one large event with the entire student body at Camp Randall.

In years past there were four separate ceremonies at the Kohl Center over a weekend in May.

Officials expect approximately 6,000 graduating students, along with an estimated 40,000 family and friends to attend the ceremony. That’s about half the size of the crowd on Badger game days. The student government said they have been working for this change for a while.

“We have not all been together as a class since at freshman convocation, so it will be a great chance as our last hurrah, as they say,” Sarah Neibar, UW senior from Morristown, N.J.

“No one can leave UW without getting caught up with the Badger spirit that is really exemplified at Camp Randall this is a place where we could really unite all that good Badger energy,” said Joe Meeker, UW senior, from Waunakee.

“We wanted everyone to sit down at one place at the same time together — celebrating being a Badger on the same day at the same time,” said Andrew Bulovsky, from Lodi.

“This is the pilot and hopefully everything runs smoothly and logistics are all finalized, so it’s something we can repeat in years going forward,” said Nick Checker, from Oak Creek.

The Wisconsin State Historical Society released photos of the 1955 ceremony at Camp Randall Monday.

The ceremony will be held at noon on Saturday, May 17. If it rains, graduates and family will have to sit through the inclement weather because the ceremony goes on rain or shine.

Dean of Students Lori Berquam said details are being finalized but they are sharing the plans now so families can plan ahead.

The winter graduation ceremonies will stay at the Kohl Center.
