UW reviewing complaint after anti-Trump signs posted on College Republicans office

UW-Madison says its Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards is reviewing complaints of a student covering the windows of the College Republicans student office with signs calling President Donald Trump a sexist and racist.

The College Republicans posted a video of an unidentified student posting the signs on Twitter Wednesday. The video contains an anti-Trump song with explicit language.

The College Republicans of UW-Madison welcomes all students to our office to respectfully discuss their ideas. Today’s demonstration was a clear violation of University policy and was extremely disrespectful to College Republicans studying in the office and other students nearby.

The video was also retweeted by the Republican Party of Wisconsin.

This is the kind of intolerance we are up against. Today, a campus leftist targeted the College Republicans of UW-Madison’s office. It’s sad to see the disrespect toward students that support President @realDonaldTrump. *Disclaimer explicit language* https://t.co/ADQFlDTQcB

“The College Republicans of UW-Madison welcomes all students to our office to respectfully discuss their ideas,” the UW College Republicans said in a later tweet. “Today’s demonstration was a clear violation of University policy and was extremely disrespectful to College Republicans studying in the office and other students nearby.”

The university’s official Twitter account responded, saying while it supports free speech, UW policies don’t allow the posting of unapproved signs or posters in public places.

UW supports the free speech rights of its students along with civil discourse around political issues.

UW policies prohibit the posting of unapproved signs, posters and other material in public spaces. 1/2
