UW police warn of man with knife near library

University of Wisconsin police asked people to avoid the area of Helen C. White Library Monday night after receiving reports around 7:15 p.m. of a man with a knife.

“Everyone in the area should utilize caution and seek shelter as UWPD searches for the suspect,” an alert sent to UW students and faculty around 8:20 p.m. said.

UWPD said Dane County Communications received a 911 call from someone reporting an altercation involving a knife near College Library/H.C. White Hall.

Witnesses told police the fight broke out between two men and a woman, where one of the men displayed a knife.

Around 8:30 p.m., police said on Twitter they believed the man left the area and there was no longer an ongoing threat.

The man is described as white with blonde hair. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt with horizontal stripes and blue jeans.

He was last seen walking toward Lake Mendota from the library, officials said.

According to a release, no victims have come forward to report a crime and the incident remains under investigation.
