UW officially announces retirement of Barry Alvarez as athletic director
MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin athletic department is officially announcing the retirement of athletic director and legendary football coach Barry Alvarez.
Alvarez’s retirement was first reported Monday night and confirmed by the university in a series of tweets and farewell messages.
The College Football Hall of Famer arrived in Madison in 1990 as the team’s new football coach and transformed a struggling program into an annual contender in the Big Ten, winning multiple Rose Bowls. Alvarez retired from coaching after the 2005 season, after serving in the dual roles of football coach and athletic director in 2004 and 2005.
Badger teams have won a combined 16 national championships and 74 conference titles during Alvarez’s tenure as athletic director.
Alvarez is expected to announce his decision himself later today.
