UW-Madison cuts ties with local Sigma Chi fraternity chapter
MADISON, Wis. — UW-Madison’s Sigma Chi fraternity has lost its status as a registered student organization at the university months after the organization was suspended for a probation violation in October.
According to UW-Madison, the university’s chapter surrendered its charter to the group’s parent organization, Sigma Chi International, on Jan. 30. SCI voted to accept the surrender, which means the UW-Madison chapter is no longer a registered student organization with the university. By losing its status as a registered student organization, the fraternity is no longer allowed to hold events either independently or with other organizations.
As part of the decision, the university recommends students avoid joining the organization citing the potential for safety concerns due to the lack of university oversight.
