UW-Madison celebrates Class of 2020 inside Camp Randall
MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Madison finally celebrated the Class of 2020 on Saturday in an in-person celebration at Camp Randall.
Officials said a little more than 25% of the total class attended the ceremony, while thousands of friends and family member joined from the seats.
“Class of 2020, after the strangest and most difficult year-and-a-half many of us have ever experienced, it feels great to be able to say: Welcome back to campus, welcome back to Camp Randall Stadium, and congratulations on your graduation from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, one of the top public universities in the world!” Chancellor Rebecca Blank told the crowd.
The celebration was part of a weekend of events intended to give the class of 2020 some of those special moments they missed last year due to the pandemic.
Saturday’s event was not an official commencement since degrees were conferred virtually last year.
Saturday’s celebration ended with multiple traditions — fireworks, “Jump Around,” a ceremonial tassel turning, “Varsity.”
