UW Health, UnityPoint Health-Meriter launch fetal treatment center

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin’s only fetal diagnosis and treatment center has been launched by UW Health and UnityPoint Health-Meriter.

In Wisconsin, about 2,000 infants are born with a defect every year, affecting three percent of all births.

The fetal diagnosis and treatment center will consolidate care from specialists in many fields, offering diagnosis and counseling, as well as surgery before or after the baby is born. With the new center, mothers will no longer need to stay in the hospital or travel out of state if their baby needs a procedure done after birth.

“We’re really excited to be able to offer this kind of access to care to families in our community,” Dr. Inna Lobeck of UW Health said.

The center manages a broad range of conditions, and doctors at the center can now perform surgery on babies still in the womb — something they say wasn’t possible 20 to 30 years ago.

“We’re able to offer hope where the was none, previously,” Dr. Lobeck said.
