UW Health: Confirmed flu cases significantly higher than last year

MADISON, Wis. — The latest flu number from UW Health show a significant increase from the number of cases at the same time last year.

So far, the number of flu patients at UW Hospital is hundreds more than it was this time last year. Just this last week, Monday through Sunday, 188 adults and 125 children tested positive for influenza at the hospital. The numbers from last week alone are higher than the total number of confirmed influenza cases for the entire 2018-2019 season.

This season’s number of confirmed influenza cases in adults is now up to 929. More than 90 of those patients needed to be hospitalized for more than a day. At this point last year, that number was just 198.

The increase in flu cases among children is even larger with 821 confirmed cases this season compared to just 76 cases this time last year.

According to the CDC, flu activity peaks between December and February, and it can last as late as May, which means flu season is far from over.
