UW group says some Mifflin Party shirts racist
A University of Wisconsin-Madison student group is upset over the affiliation some students are making between Cinco de Mayo on Saturday and the Mifflin Street Block Party.
The group Badgers Against Racism on campus is taking issue with T-shirts that depict the Mexican flag with a beer bong on it. The group claims that it’s racist and disrespectful to Mexican culture.
“They feel it’s so easy to just take something from another culture and kind of manipulate it to fit the spirit of Mifflin,” said Caresse Rios, of Badgers Against Racism. “They’re appropriating a culture that doesn’t belong to them.”
The group spent Friday afternoon making their own T-shirts. One said, “Respect.” The other had four badgers on it, showing what can be a disrespectful stereotype.
