UW campus officer named new chief at SIU
Lieutenant served UW-Madison 14 years
CARBONDALE, Ill. — A lieutenant with the police force for the University of Wisconsin’s Madison campus is the new chief of public safety at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
SIU says Benjamin Newman will begin in Carbondale on Oct. 9 as the successor to Todd Sigler, who is retiring after 30 years at SIU.
Newman joined UW-Madison’s police department as an officer and evidence technician in 1999. He was promoted to sergeant in 2003 and to lieutenant five years later.
He now he manages policy development and implementation, supervises personnel, oversees aspects of the budget, and conducts training and investigations for the department.
SIU’s chancellor, Rita Cheng, credits Newman with having “highly relevant experience as a police officer and administrator on a large, complex campus.”
