UW building evacuated because of suspected ammonia leak
People allowed back in building after an hour-long evacuation
MADISON, Wis. — Employees are back in the Engineering Research Building on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus following an evacuation late Tuesday morning about a possible ammonia leak.
The incident happened around 11:20 a.m. Tuesday in the 1500 block of Engineering Drive.
UW police officers arrived on the scene first and evacuated the building.
Firefighters used breathing masks as they checked other rooms in the building.
The leak was reported in a laboratory on the ninth floor. Firefighters shut off the 20-pound ammonia tank that was the source of the leak.
The Madison Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials team also responded to the leak to monitor conditions and offer advice.
Once the leak was sealed, authorities allowed people back into the building around 12:20 p.m.
