US Coast Guard searching Lake Michigan for plane

Small plane lost contact with air traffic controllers about a mile offshore

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching Lake Michigan near Milwaukee by boat and air for a small plane that lost contact with air traffic controllers.

Petty Officer Chris Yaw said air traffic controllers at Mitchell International Airport last had radar contact with the single engine plane about a mile offshore near Milwaukee.

He said the U.S. Coast Guard started searching at about 4 p.m. Saturday and later found a debris field in the water.

He said he doesn’t know how many were aboard.

In a recording on her voicemail, Elizabeth Cory, a spokeswoman with the Federal Aviation Administration, said the FAA had no immediate record of a missing aircraft.
