A Canadian man was out more than $846,000 in inheritance after a bank draft got lost in the mail.

After CBC News reported the story, TD Canada Trust issued an apology to the Ontario family and released the fortune.

“We understand that we’ve reached a resolution with our customer,” bank spokeswoman Cheryl Ficker told CBC News. “It’s clear to us we didn’t get this right along the way and that there was more we could have done to come to a resolution faster.”

Lorette Taylor and her husband, John, had been caught in a battle with the bank and the United Parcel Service, which had only refunded the $32 shipping fee. TD had appeared to be in no rush to issue a new bank draft, until CBC News did a story on the family’s struggle.

“It was a total surprise” the woman told CBC News. “Never in my wildest imagination did I think something like this would happen.”

Though the bank said that there was a process in place to handle lost or stolen bank drafts, the family waited nearly 10 months to receive the money left to the woman’s brother in their father’s will, CBC News reported.
