Unlocked car left running stolen while woman grabs carryout, police say
MADISON, Wis. — A car that was left unlocked and running was stolen Monday night while the owner went into a restaurant to pick up some carryout, according to a release.
The woman stopped around 7:50 p.m. in the 600 block of South Park Street to pick up some food, and when she came out her car was gone, police said.
Officers found the car about an hour later near Britta Parkway, according to the release. Two teens dumped the car in the 1700 block of Niemann Place and took off running.
An officer detained a 17-year-old he saw sprinting across a parking lot on Verona Road, officials said. The teen denied being in the stolen car.
The teen has many open criminal cases and is wearing an ankle monitoring bracelet, according to the release. As part of his release, he is not allowed outside his home after 8 p.m.
Police arrested him on tentative charges of bail jumping and obstructing.
The teen claimed he had not stolen a car but was dealing drugs, which is why he ran from police, according to the release. Officials said he remains a suspect in the car theft investigation.
