UnityPoint Health-Meriter announces expansion on child psychiatry hospital
MADISON, Wis. — UnityPoint Health-Meriter is moving forward with an $11 million expansion to the child and adolescent psychiatry hospital on Madison’s west side.
Officials announced today that they plan to add a renovation to the building for the purpose of serving more children. They plan to add 10 inpatient beds to the facility, as well as outpatient services that can accommodate full-day and partial-day programs.
The hospital saw more than 800 kids in 2017, and has 20 inpatient beds. Officials said the hospital works off wait lists, and aren’t able to handle demand. The renovation would give them a chance to serve more children.
“I think we’re all seeing it in the news and the media how mental health is really a struggle and access is difficult. These kids need help now so when we can accept them into our unit and do the types of treatments and therapies they need, that’s really a service to the community,” Katie Schmitt, associate director of behavioral health, said.
UnityPoint Health-Meriter plans to break ground for the expansion in fall 2018, and hopes to open fall 2019.
