Two UW freshmen will run for campus City Council seat
MADISON, Wis. — After Ald. Zach Wood, District 8 announced Wednesday that he would not seek re-election two University of Wisconsin-Madison freshmen have stepped up to fill the seat.
Mathew Mitnick, 18, and Avra Reddy, 19, will be competing to fill the student-dominated 8th District, which encompasses most of the campus area. Wood had represented the campus community since 2015 and said in a Facebook post that he would step aside to make way for new young leaders.
Reddy announced her candidacy in a Facebook post on Friday in which she said the success of women of color in the recent midterms inspired her to run. As a City Council member, she said she would fight for affordable housing and increased safety on campus.
Mitnick said in a release that affordable housing, student engagement, flood prevention and social justice would be at the top of his agenda if elected. He said his parents, both public servants, inspired him to run for Wood’s seat.
